An Astronomer's Career

Astronomer's Laboratory

This page explains most of the information about an astronomer's career and the statistics about its growth and job employment rate!

What Does an Astronomer Do?

An astronomer's daily work day is pretty interesting. Some of their occupations on the job include collecting characteristic data from planets, moons, black holes, etc. by using mathemetics and precise calculations. They also conduct various experiments on many scientific computer programs to analyze the data that they have collected from celestial bodies in space.

Where Does an Astronomer Work?

An astronomer typically works in a big research laboratory or even telescopes (As seen below in the picture). They often work in research laboratories to conduct various experiments inside to gather data about planets. Some astronomers often work in huge telescopes as well since they can easily observe objects in space whenever they need to.

How Do Astronomers Work?

Astronomers mainly work alone when gathering research about a topic, and they also mainly work alone when writing research papers about their topics. However, they commonly work in groups when they work on more hands-on experiments, jobs and labs. They do this to share reliable information with one another more efficiently than trying to gather information alone.

How Long Do Astronomers Work?

Most astronomers work at full time jobs, meaning they work a bit above 40 hours per week. Astronomers sometimes need to spend more time working if they need to go work at night. Astronomers might need to do this to get more efficient data from telescopes because the sun can block some of the things people can see in a telescope. Therefore, at night, the sun isn't present on that side of the Earth to hide anything from sight that a telescope has the capacity of seeing.

What is the Rate of Employment for Astronomers?

The rate of employment for astronomers is very low, because there are expected to be about 2,400 new astronomer job openings by 2022 (In North America). This means that the rate of employment will go up by about 10% by 2022. Since job openings are very limited, competition for jobs as an astronomer are very strong, as most people take Doctorate Degrees in Astronomy to increase their chances of getting a job as an astronomer.
